Do Newborn Photographers Provide Props?
When a client reaches out to me inquiring about a newborn session, one of the first questions they ask is, “Do you provide the props for my session?”
Yes, most newborn photographers provide props. Typically photographers will have a wide variety of props, including blankets, hats, headbands, baskets, stuffed animals, and more.
If you are looking for a specific prop, contacting the photographer in advance is always a good idea to see if they have it.
What type of Props are used in a Newborn Session with Images by Torri Howard?
Here are some of the most common props that I use in my newborn photography:
Wraps: Wraps are essential for newborn photography. I use them to swaddle and help settle babies, especially if they are fussy or wide awake. I use wraps to to add a touch of color to your photos or use them as layers within another prop. My favorite wraps are jersey knits that stretch both ways. I often will start with a base wrap and add another wrap of a different texture or material over the base wrap so I can capture multiple variations with minimal disruption to the baby.
Hats: Hats are a great way to add a bit of variety to the session. I have a variety of hats for both baby boys and baby girls including a few adorable animal hats such as an elephant, lamb, bumble bee, puppy dog, and many others.
Headbands: Headbands add a touch color and style when photographing baby girls. I have headbands of various colors and styles.
Outfits: Outfits for baby boys and girls are perfect for newborn sessions. I have choices for both boys and girls, including footed rompers, pants, little dresses, and matching hats. Simple outfits that keep the focus on the baby are what I prefer.
Baskets and Buckets: Baskets and buckets are great additions to my sessions. I have a variety of styles of both. I like to layer them with different textures and colors to create images of your baby.
Stuffed animals: Stuffed animals can add a touch of cuteness to the photos. I have a bunny, bear, lamb, and numerous others that are the perfect size for your baby.
Other props: I may use other props in my newborn photography sessions, including flowers, beds, dream catchers, strollers, and so many more. Every week, a new prop that I ordered arrives on my doorstep. I have a prop addiction.
I capture images of the baby both with props and without props. I have a simplistic style that focuses on your brand-new baby.
Is a prop REALLY a prop?
In today’s digital age, which includes artificial intelligence, photographers have so many more resources and tools at their fingertips that were not available even ten years ago. Digital images are now available that include a variety of props, backgrounds, and even animals. The photographer has to photograph your baby at the right angle and composite the baby into a digital image. Do you love elephants and want your baby in an elephant's trunk? Can I bring my own props or outfits?
I have everything needed for your session. Do you have a unique souvenir or trinket you want me to incorporate? Feel free to bring it. Some parents will order a cute crochet knit outfit with the diaper cover and matching hat they saw on Amazon. In reality, those outfits NEVER fit a baby correctly; ultimately, parents change their minds when I put the outfit on the baby. Did Grandma or Auntie knit a hat, booties, or blanket for the newest member of your family that you want me to capture? I am happy to take a couple of shots in whatever you bring. Remember, you hired me to capture images of your baby based on my previous work and style.
