How to Dress for a Newborn Photo Shoot?
I often am asked when parents schedule their newborn session, what should I bring for the baby to wear? My studio is stocked with wraps, hats, headbands and little outfits. I will create the perfect look for your newborn. The next question is inevitably what should I wear? What about my husband? What about my other kids? What will fit me postpartum and look good? Below are a few tips that will have you feeling beautiful and provide a perfect look for your photos:
How to Dress for a Newborn Photo Shoot?
Wear a gown from my studio collection or bring your own gown
Long dresses are very flattering on a new mom. I have a large collection of gowns that are used for both maternity sessions and for postpartum moms that are very flattering and will have you feeling beautiful and will provide stunning images.
Pick neutral colors such as cream or white for the top. Avoid black or other dark colors.
Sticking with neutral colors will not only illuminate your newborn but will also illuminate you. Dark colors tend to cast shadows and make the baby look blotchy and red. Neutrals are best for newborn photos.
Fabrics that are textured and flow and the other little details
Fabrics that flow and are textured, such as lace details are beautiful in photos. A cardigan sweater with a tank underneath and 3/4 sleeves is also another great option. Don’t forget the little details such as a special necklace or rings or hair clip to finish your look. Also touch up your nails as needed.
What about Dads and Siblings?
Dads wardrobe should coordinate with whatever mom is wearing. Colors such as light blue or light grays or even pink work well with neutral colors. Dad should stay away from any patterns. A button up shirt works well and sleeves can be rolled slightly for a more casual look. If button ups are not dads style, a simple light color t-shirt will also work well.
Siblings should also coordinate with what mom is wearing. Neutral colors work best and will be complementary. Light pinks, blues, creams and whites are all good choices. Small patterns are okay but should be minimal so they do not distract from images. Dresses for little girls and button ups for little boys are a great option or even t-shirts. Barefoot siblings look the best and finish the look.
Don’t forgo parent photos because you don’t feel you look your best
As a new mom, you may not feel your best and may want to skip photos with your newborn. I always try to encourage moms to let me capture a few. It is always better to take them than regret after the fact that these pictures were not taken. These are precious photos of you with your baby, who will never again be this small. I promise, you will cherish these photos for years to come and will never regret your decision to capture these moments.
