This blog post will delve into the essential practices that guide our every step.

Welcoming a newborn into our studio is a delicate process that requires meticulous preparation and a keen eye for potential hazards. From controlling the studio's environment to selecting the most comfortable and secure props, every aspect plays a vital role in creating a safe space for these tiny subjects.

NEWBORN STUDIO SAFETY

PREPARING THE STUDIO FOR YOUR NEWBORN:

A newborn photographer takes several steps to prepare their studio for a newborn baby. Here are some standard practices:

  • Safety Measures: The photographer ensures the studio environment is safe for the newborn and the family by removing any potential hazards, such as sharp objects, loose wires, or other hazards that may cause harm.

  • Temperature Control: Newborn babies are sensitive to temperature changes. The photographer maintains a warm and comfortable environment in the studio. Use of a space heater is acceptable as long as the space heater is in good working condition, with no exposed wires or malfunctioning parts. Protect the area from items coming in contact with the heater, such as flammable materials, curtains, or other potential hazards. A thermostat can also warm up the studio. Monitor the baby's comfort throughout the photo shoot and closely observe the baby's reaction to the environment. Look for signs of discomfort, such as fussiness, sweating, or skin flushing. If the baby appears too warm, adjust the heater or turn it off temporarily. Do not overheat the room to ensure the safety of the baby. A small hand-held cooling fan is ideal to cool down the baby as needed quickly during the summer months.

  • Lighting Setup: Soft, diffused lighting is essential for capturing gentle and flattering images of newborns. The photographer sets up their lighting equipment to create a soft and even light source that minimizes shadows and harsh contrasts.

  • Backgrounds and Props:  Avoid using props that could cause harm: Be cautious with props and accessories, ensuring they are baby-safe and won't pose any risk of injury or discomfort to the newborn. Props should be sturdy and stable to prevent any accidents or mishaps. Avoid props that could easily topple over or collapse and avoid props with sharp edges or rough surfaces that could potentially injure the baby.

  • Cleaning and Sanitizing: The studio is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before the arrival of the newborn, which includes cleaning the floors and surfaces. Ensure that all props, blankets, and accessories used during the session have been sanitized to maintain hygiene and prevent potential health issues.

  • Spotter or Assistant: Having an assistant or spotter nearby is essential to the baby's safety during the session. This person can ensure the baby's comfort, adjust the props, and help with posing.

  • Preparing Parents: Communication with the parents before the photo shoot to provide instructions on preparing the baby for the session, including feeding the baby beforehand, dressing them in loose-fitting clothes to prevent marks on the skin, and bringing extra diapers, wipes, and blankets.

  • Calm and Relaxing Atmosphere: Creating a peaceful and soothing atmosphere is crucial to keep the baby comfortable during the session. The photographer may use white noise machines, play soft music, or other techniques to help the baby relax and sleep.

  • Patience and Flexibility: Newborn photography requires patience and flexibility, as babies have schedules and moods. The photographer allows ample time for feeding, soothing, and settling the baby to ensure a successful and stress-free photoshoot.

It's important to note that newborn photographers prioritize the safety and well-being of the baby above all else. They may undergo additional training or certifications to specialize in newborn photography and ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to handle newborns safely
